Choosing the Right Dog Collar
Choosing a collar for a dog can be difficult especially for new dog owners. With the wide array of collars to choose from, some new pet owners simply pick collars based on color and design without thinking if their pets will be comfortable wearing them.
The first step in picking the perfect collar for your pet is by measuring your dog’s neck. An accurate measurement enables you to get a collar that’s not too loose or too tight. After getting the right measurement, pick a collar that is suitable for your purpose. As a dog owner, you must know which collars are great for everyday use and those that are useful for obedience trainings.
Nylon or Leather collars
A leather or nylon collar is considered as the traditional collar for dogs since it is safe for everyday use. This kind of collar usually has a metal ring where dog tags and leashes are fastened.
Buckle Collars
Buckle collars are also considered as one of safest dog collars aside from those made of leather or nylon. Buckle collars are great for dogs with either short or long hair coats. Although buckle collars are common for both puppies and big dogs, some pet owners still think that these collars fail to give enough control for stronger dog breeds.
Harnesses
Dog harnesses are used for dog breeds that are trained to pull sleds. These harnesses are fastened to a dog’s body and around its ribcage. Dog owners that use harnesses for their dogs must make sure that their pets won’t pull too much to avoid muscle strains and tendon injuries.
Slip Collars and Choke Chains
If you plan to put your dog under an obedience training program, using a slip collar or a choke collar will be helpful since it provides you with the ease of releasing or tightening it based on your dog’s moves. Just like with other collars, improper use of a choke chain or slip collar can cause pressure on the dog’s throat and trachea.
For new dog owners, it is best to bring your pets with you when buying a collar for them. This is to ensure that your pets can move comfortably even with a collar or chain attached to them. As for the design of the collar, selecting the basic or the traditional style is still the best way to go. Better yet, ask a veterinarian’s help when choosing the proper collar for your dog. This way, you will know which type of collar suits your pet best.
